No Experience Required
Today’s blog post comes from writer Taryn Carbol
In today’s day and age of technology, if you are applying for a new job, you are likely scrolling through online applications. Perusing these applications can become discouraging as they make their demands known: an advanced degree, over five years of working experience in a related field, etc. But here is the wonderful thing about writing, there is no experience required.
Don’t get me wrong, you need a basic understanding of grammar and how to string together quality sentences; however, there is no one degree or technical program that creates a writer. Writers are made from all different backgrounds and experiences.
This diversity is what makes writing so beautiful. We each have our own individual path and story that brought us to putting these words on the page or on the screen. We can learn so much about the world around us by sharing our unique perspectives and stories that have come about by our diverse life experiences. So, when it comes to an online job application for writing, it should really read “Experience Required: Having Lived Life.”
Guess what? You have the required experience! This is so freeing! However, it can also be a bit daunting as well. I am the type of person that does not like to do things I am not good at. Can you relate? I get frustrated super easily if I don’t know how to do something. This is why you will not catch me playing volleyball or driving a stick-shift vehicle. My mind falls into the trap of pondering future failure.
What if I am not any good at writing? How will I face the shame of failing at this new thing? Here is another lovely thing about writing: there is no metric for failure. It isn’t like a sporting event in which you either scored more points or you didn’t. There is no ranking system in which you achieve different levels of mastery in writing. The only way that you can truly fail in writing is to not write at all.
So, here is my challenge to you (and to myself): start writing. What message is on your heart that will benefit someone else? What has God done in your life that would encourage someone to pursue a relationship with Him further? If you are willing to be obedient and put the words down, trust that God will make sure that the reader that needs to read them will see them.
Friend, you have been accepted to the position of writer. You have the required experience, and you cannot fail. Someone needs to hear your message, so go write it!
